How do I make sure that my site is available through search engines?

Search engines are extremely important for any online business, as the major part of the Internet population use them to find a new product or a service. So for accessibility, your website needs to be listed high on the search engine results.

There are several things you can do to increase the probability of high rankings:

  1. Meta Tags are HTML scripts that tell search engines your keywords and description of your site. They are "invisible" and sit in the HTML code of your page. Make certain that they are relevant - that means consider what words or phrases customers would use to find you on a search engine. Those are the words that should be in your tags.
  2. Search engines are computer programs and sometimes they don't all "take" the first time. We suggest re-submitting your site every 3 months.
  3. Target body text to increase site relevance. That means make sure that the text of your site includes the keywords you have included in your meta tags.
  4. Incoming and out going links to provide better link relevance. The more sites that have links to your site, the greater the probability that your site will be highly ranked. So, request that suppliers and customers have a link to your site on theirs, and in return you will reciprocate.
  5. Almost all search engines share their search results or receive their results from other search engines. Therefore, we have determined that the following search engines are used by over 90% of the Internet traffic:
Google, MSN, AOL, AltaVista, Iwon, Direct hit, Fast/Alltheweb, Lycos, Netscape, Hot Bot, Sprinks, overture, infospace, nbci, canada, inbounds, kanoodle, WiseNet, Excite and NorthernLight.

How long will it take before my website is indexed by the search engines?

After we have submitted your web site to search engines and directories, it will take between one day and eight weeks (average) for your URL submission to be added to the search engines database (indexed). Usually, AltaVista and Infoseek (Go Network) will take only a few days to index your page. However, most of the other larger search engines will take several weeks. Such a delay between the date of submission and the date of indexing is due to the extremely high number of submissions (sometimes tens of thousands) most popular engines receive every day.

Index Time Estimate...

1-2 weeks: AltaVista, Infoseek (Go Network)
2-6 weeks: Excite, HotBot, Lycos, WebCrawler
6-12 weeks: Yahoo

How much will it cost?

At Binary Ink Web Applications, we create custom web applications for our clients. By custom, we mean that your site is designed to meet your customer's needs. We work closely with your company to determine your key marketing objectives, and create a site that meets those objectives. If it isn't possible to meet all of your needs because of budgetary constraints, we can create your site in phases.

Using a phased approach also keeps the site interesting and relevant. There is always something going on that you can keep clients aware of. And your company appears to be developing to meet their needs. Through this process, you will become aware of what is important, and what is less so, to your clients.

Why do I need a web site?

The answer is threefold - Visibility, Communication and Cost.

Visibility - While most people still go to the yellow pages to find a local business, more and more people are looking to the Web as any easy way to find services and products. Directories and search engines give your customers the ability to find your company on the basis of more than just your company name. If a customer is looking for a certain product or service, or a business within a certain geographical location, or wants to find products and services that match unique manufacturing or material qualifications, they can more easily find it on the Web with a search engine than elsewhere. If you sell red wagons, a customer searching for a red wagon should be able to find your company.

Communication - E-mail, FAQ's (Frequently Asked Questions), forms, newsgroups, chat rooms and other forms of Internet communication can make communication between you and your customer much easier. FAQ's can allow your customers to find answers to their questions easily, and it can be done at any time of the day. E-mail can be used in the same way when a customer cannot find the answer he or she needs, or when additional information is desired. Reading and writing e-mail is an activity that can be scheduled, improving the use of your time. Automatic responses can be set up to respond to certain inquiries, and forms and surveys can be created for on-line use, giving you the ability to get more information about your customer than you might get in an e-mail message.

Newsgroups and chat rooms can provide your customers with ways to interact with you and your other customers, depending on your business requirements. This feature can almost serve as a help desk, where your customers can answer questions as well as get answers to their own questions.

Not all of these options are right for all companies, but all companies can use at least some of these features to ease their communication workload. Your customers will appreciate both the ease of contacting you and your responsiveness to their requests.

Cost - Advertising is not cheap. A simple Yellow Pages listing can cost hundreds of dollars and a full-page listing is beyond many companies' budgets. Compared to many traditional forms of publicity, a web site can be very cost effective. A well-designed web site can give your customers a lot of information about your company at a small cost to quantity ratio. A web site also offers a benefit that you will not find anywhere else - the ability to update your advertising (web site) whenever you want, at a very low additional cost. If you needed to, your web site could even be updated daily. Try that with any other advertising medium.

How does advertising online differ from traditional print advertising?

Traditional print is a static form of advertising. Once you've created the piece, you can't change it to make it relevant to the changing status of your business. You have to recreate it.

The web is a dynamic form. Whatever you think of today can be changed on your site as you require it. If you decide to change the way you describe your business, the words can change immediately. We can even create applications so that you can change them yourself.

Once my site is online, what should I do now?

Congratulations on getting your site live. It may seem like you've gone through hoops to get here, but now is the time to get planning. To keep people coming back to your site, you need to keep it interesting and relevant. Information needs to be current, and questions need to be answered easily online.

Keep adding to your site. It's the least expensive form of advertising available. As customers make suggestions to your sales force, act on them. If there are specific questions that get asked often, put an FAQ online. Keep the lines of communication flowing with your customers.
